Bhubaneswar: Odisha experienced significant rainfall on Tuesday as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal developed into a depression, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The districts that faced heavy rainfall included Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Kandhamal.
The IMD reported that the depression, located over the northwest and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal and the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, moved north-northwest at a speed of 7 km/h over the past six hours, making landfall near Gopalpur early in the morning.
Forecasts indicate that the weather system will continue moving northwest across southern Odisha and southern Chhattisgarh, likely weakening into a well-marked low-pressure area within the next six hours.
Officials have warned that rain is expected to persist across most of the state until August 23.
Reports from the southern districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur indicated landslides, road and bridge submergence, and fallen trees.
The IMD cautioned that sea conditions are expected to be rough along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal during this period, advising fishermen to refrain from venturing out.
